The Pros (and Cons) of Blogging

Today, I’m going to talk about the pros and cons of blogging: what makes being part of this world so great, but also the (real) downsides.

The Pros

Screen Shot 2015-06-03 at 10.09.54 AMPRO:The sense of community within the blogging world is so great and so comforting. I feel as if I’ve known bloggers for forever, even after doing something as simple as commenting on their post or featuring them as a guest on my blog! This community for me has always been very supportive and happy – I know that if I’m having a rough day or I’m having blog issues, I can ask for help and receive great advice, making new friends along the way!

CON: I will definitely feel some pressure from time-to-time related to blogging and keeping up with regular posts. Discussing a post with followers/readers and in the end not being able to deliver content on time is always so upsetting! I see other bloggers that post daily – sometimes twice a day! – and I feel stuck. Am I supposed to be doing that too? Is that how to make my blog better? At the end of the day, I have to tell myself why I blog in the first place – to talk about things and people I love, to share stories and give advice, and meet new people! If posting once or twice a week is what I can do and what I can contribute, okay! Ultimately, I want to make someone laugh, make someone’s day a little brighter, or make someone smile. As corny as that sounds, its true! I can accomplish why I blog and make someone’s day a little brighter even if Always, S sees just two posts a week when my to-do list off of the blog is sky high.

PRO: While sometimes the commitment to a blog is overwhelming, because it is so consistent, I apply some blogging techniques to my everyday life. Blogging has improved my time management skills tremendously and its great to be committed to something long-term! Accountability also ties in with commitment because at the end of the day, I have to go back and interact with many bloggers in Facebook groups. These groups give me the great opportunity to find new favorite blogs and relate to other writers, some from a city close by! (To find out more about these groups, read my bio and contact me!)

PRO: Finally, similar to what I talked about with commitment to blogging, writing for Always, S has made me grow as a writer but also as an individual. I’ve learned a lot about myself and about what it takes to be a consistent and committed writer! And I can only go grow up from here 🙂

What have you learned through blogging? What are the pros and cons of blogging? Let me know!

  • I love that you made commitment a pro! A lot of people view it as a con but I love committing myself to writing consistently and putting in effort to grow my blog.

    • Savannah

Thank you! As hard as it is sometimes, I do view commitment as a positive thing. Its such a good feeling when I am rewarded with followers, comments, etc. for the time and effort I put into my blog. Thanks for commenting!

  • Great Post! Commitment is definitely a challenge, but it’s rewarding to stick with something.

    • Savannah

Definitely! But the reward is so great. Thanks for commenting!

  • I think the fact that there is a community of people who understand what you’re going through and are there to let you know you’re not the only one usually help ease the pressure. I love this post. 🙂

    • Savannah

For sure! The sense of community has to be my favorite part of blogging. I’ve loved getting to know new people. Thanks for commenting!

Right! Thank you so much for commenting and reading! 🙂

  • Love this post!
Sometimes it is tough to get out content every single day, and sometimes posting every day can lead to you not putting out your best work so maybe it’s good to only post a couple of times per week.

Such a good statement – quality over quantity, for sure. That’s definitely hard to remember sometimes when you are reading blogs that post very frequently! Thanks for commenting! 🙂

  • I definitely understand the pressure section! I go crazy with it, but I post once every 4-5 days – I know I should post more! This is a great food-for-thought sort of post, I love it!

I have a similar “schedule” – I try to post at least once a week, not including my guest posts. Thanks for commenting!

  • Truth! The pressure can be no bueno, but the opportunity for growth and community make it so worth it!

  • I love this!!! I love blogging but I 100% agree with this, esp. the commitment part!! Great post!

  • The pressure can definitely get to me, especially when I have writer’s block. Community really makes it worth the time and effort.

Writer’s block is the WORST. Community definitely makes it all worth it, I totally agree. Thank you for commenting!

  • I think any hobby comes with pros and cons. For the most part I love blogging and the community it has created in my life but there are times I get frustrated with it of course.

    • Savannah

I definitely agree. Thank you so much for commenting!

  • ktm

One of my favorite things about blogging is the community – you meet so many amazing girls from all across the country through it!

  • Such a great post! I love that you put commitment as a pro.. most people would say it’s a con, to commit all that time and effort to creating something but I like you see it as a pro! We are fab and I’m so proud of all of us for blogging and creating something of our own!

    • Savannah

Thank you so much! You’re right – we ARE fab and this is such a great creative outlet. Thank you for commenting!

  • The biggest pros for me have been the sense of community & a creative outlet! I think the con is sometimes I feel like I don’t have enough hours in the day to complete blogging duties and other duties.

That can definitely be a downside (time management), and I agree – community is my favorite part. Thank you for commenting! 🙂

  • I love this post! I love how you talked about pressure. There definitely is a lot of pressure and it can be really overwhelming. But if you remember that you’re doing what you love and inspiring people in some way (for example, with this post), then it’s all worth it!

Exactly – I just have to keep in mind why I love blogging and know that its all worth it! Thank you for commenting!

  • Love this list, and it’s so nice that you only have one con! Pressure is hard for me to deal with in blogging, but everything else makes it worth the struggle.

    • Savannah

I totally agree. At the end of the day, blogging is so rewarding. Thank you for commenting!

  • This is an excellent post!! I agreed with all of your pros! My con would be that a few select people in the blogging world are very competitive and not as friendly as others, and sometimes that can creative an air of negativity for everyone. But thankfully- most girls that blog are TOTAL sweethearts!!! I have made so many amazing friends through blogging. 🙂 (We should have a Millennial Charlotte area meet-up this fall!)

    • Savannah

Oh my gosh…SUCH a good idea! I’ve never been to a meet-up, so I would love to get to know and hang out with more bloggers in my area. I would love to help you arrange one for this fall! You can email me if you want later down the road at swraex@gmail.com and we can plan! I definitely agree that there is a competitive side to blogging, but bloggers who are like this are few and far between.

      Thank you for commenting! 🙂

  • Aww, this is beautiful! I think there are a lot of pros and cons to blogging and how it affects your life really. To some people, creating a blog is a big step. To others, it’s normal. It all depends on the person I guess. This is incredibly helpful to people who are on the fence on creating a blog! Great post <3

  • My growth as a writer and the opportunity to write for so many great platforms has been my favorite part of blogging…It has made the challenges worth it, not to mention I simply love it!

  • LOVE this post! Blogging can be pretty hard sometimes, but it doesn’t stop me from wanting to keep doing it.

  • Great post! These are definitely things I considered before I started my blog!

  • I could not agree any more with this! The pressure is definitely the real only con I can find in blogging, too. As bloggers, we have a responsibility to our followers to deliver regularly. Thank you so much for sharing and showing me something relatable! Great post!
