3 Steps to Rocking Your Skype Interview

Happy August! WOW how crazy is that to say?! I just wrapped up a Skype interview for a possible internship this Fall and thought I would share my top 3 tips.

1. Put on pants.

You think I’m being funny – but really. You have to dress the part. Dress like you’re sitting face to face in an office: do your hair, put on natural/light makeup, and wear business casual clothes. You’ll impress your potential employer with your dedication to the interview, no matter its platform!

2. Get online early.

Log into Skype about 15-20 minutes earlier than your scheduled interview time to test its connection. Make sure you’ve arranged contact with your interviewer beforehand (you’ve accepted their friend request). If you’re a perfectionist like me, take it one step further and pull up the webcam to see how you’ll appear on the other side of the screen. Adjust lighting if necessary, make your bed/clean up your background space (!!), and have your desk clear except for a notebook and pen. Don’t forget to put your phone on silent!

3. Don’t look at yourself.

When you Skype, there’s a small little square at the bottom of your screen that shows your camera view. AVOID. EYE CONTACT. WITH YOURSELF. Seriously! Eye contact during an interview (or as close as you can get to eye contact) is just as important, if not more so, during a Skype session. This is something I did waaay too much, and if I could go back and change one thing about my interview, I would stop worrying about what I looked like and just focus on the other side of the screen.

So! What do you think? Any other big tips for acing your interview on Skype? Lemme know!

Such great tips! I always get more nervous for Skype interviews than in-person ones, but I’m not sure why! And yes — a clean background is so important… I can see people forgetting that step by accident!!

I always get so nervous for Skype interviews, but I defiantly never wear pants haha!

  • I’ve never had a skype interview but I imagine it to be really intimidating. I felt that eye contact through the camera is difficult for I will tend to stare at the screen instead of the camera causing the eye contact to drift away.

A solution I would like to suggest so that you won’t eye contact with yourself is to minimize the screen that you’re in. or put like a sticky note over it 😉

Good tips! Sometimes its hard to remember not to look at yourself in the corner and instead look into the webcam!

  • Tip two is so important! Technical difficulties are so frustrating, and it’s hard to fix something when you’re rushed and frazzled. Hope your interview went well!

  • These are such great tips- I especially think #1 is important. Just because it’s a more casual setting, doesn’t mean you should scrimp on the professionalism. Awesome post!

This is such an interesting concept because now Skype interviews happen. They weren’t around until pretty recently because people like to see you in person, but seeing through a screen is definitely a little different! xx adaatude.com
