Hi from…

HAWAII! Its 8:45am here and I just found a cute coffee shop, bought a muffin and some juice, and uploaded my pictures so far!

Here’s a Tuesday recap:

My alarm hadn’t gone off yet, but I was awake. I checked the time. 3:20am. I shut my eyes closed again, hard, but couldn’t seem to drift back off. Finally, 15 minutes later, I decided to get up. I showered, got dressed, brushed my teeth, and got my GoPro ready. At 4:30, Katie, S, and I left to make our way to the airport. When we got there, S dropped us off, hugged me goodbye, and then we were on our own.

On our own. Whoa. That sounds weird. It’s our first time flying alone, and I’m okay with it. I’m not stressed, I’m not overwhelmed…I’m not really anything except tired until I put my suitcase on the scale and it reads 52 lbs. 52? I look at the desk worker. “What do I do?”

She says, “Its two pounds over. You have to-“

“Pay a fee. Okay, how much?”

“$100.00.”

“$100.00? For two pounds?”

She stares at me. I guess that wasn’t a joke.

I turn to Katie and immediately unzip my suitcase, racking through my brain, trying to figure out what would compose those two pounds. I immediately saw my eno hammock and tossed it to Katie. “Can this fit in your bag?” I asked as I stuffed a pair of shoes into my carry-on. I lifted the suitcase to the scale for a second time. The numbers crunched, the final weight going back and forth between somewhere over 50. I was panicked. What else could I take out? What would I throw away? Finally, the numbers settled at a beautiful 49 lbs. 49!!! Leave it to me to barely make it one short of the maximum weigh limit.

Finally, we were on the plane on the way to Washington, D.C. The flight was short – less than two hours – and we got to Washington Dulles at 7:30. We had time to find our gate and grab breakfast before boarding our next plane at 8:15. I reluctantly ate a sausage and cheese muffin, waiting for the Dramamine to set in. I don’t hate flying at all – just the taking off and landing part. And breakfast really isn’t my thing.

I slept on the plane for four hours, waking up every once in a while to look out the window, hoping I could catch a view of the Grand Canyon or something major from the skies. There were lots of babies on the flight – LOTS. I think one cried for an hour straight. Every once in a while, you would see a little nugget waddling their way down the aisle, mom or dad close behind them, trying their best to entertain.

Close to 12, I woke up. We were descending!

The doors opened, and I stepped off the plane into paradise. What’s the first thing we did after landing? Go swimming, of course.

The beach is a 10 minute walk, very family friendly, not so crowded, and soooo blue! On the walk over, we passed stores like Chanel, Hermes, Prada…I have a total crush on Waikiki!

For dinner, we grabbed a burger and fries from a local supermarket. Katie’s cousin (who we are staying with) is at work most of the day. Its so exciting to be able to navigate the city and beaches by ourselves!

Well friends, that’s all I have to tell you for now! I’ll post pictures and stories as much as I can. Have you ever been to Hawaii? More specifically, Waikiki? What did you do? Where did you eat? Share please!

  • I was just in Hawaii last summer.
We went to Waikiki and then to Maui.
    I recommend Duke’s in Waikiki.
It’s not the cheapest but it’s best meal I had on the trip — if you have time, I recommend that you go there.
    Your stomach will thank you.
    Enjoy your trip, girl!

  • Your photos are so gorgeous! I’m always over the weight limit for my suitcase lol – I wish if it was under 55 they would give it a little wiggle room!

  • A few things here.
1.) This is such an awesome awesome recap. It feels like a short story, and I love it.
2.) AMAZING photography. Amazing. Was this all on your GoPro???
3.) I love that you hit 49 pounds, I’d do the exact same thing! Us girls know what the essentials are.

The first three pictures were taken by my iPhone, and the others my GoPro! And you can never bring too many pairs of shoes, and if you do, you just split them all into different bags to distribute the weight 🙂 – which is what I did prior to arriving to airport.

  • I am so jealous that you’re in Hawaii right now! It sounds like an amazing time! I love that picture of the rainbow at the top and all of your other pictures for that matter.
